Cruel games involving elephants are on the increase in Nepal. Apart from the long running international elephant polo games, recently games such as elephant football and elephant pageants are being organised. Misusing elephants to attract more tourists is not only inhumane, it will also backfire as tourists increasingly chose responsible and animal friendly practices. Witnesses have reported merciless kicking, scars and blood. One such witness noted: “Some of us are wary of reporting what might affect tourism. But the unhappiness of the animals is there for us all to see.”

All elephants are incredibly social creatures with a complex social structure and social needs. .
